Canada’s Child Support System Is Rigged Against Fathers

Canada’s child support laws are completely outdated, unfair, and designed to financially punish fathers while pretending to be neutral.

The numbers expose the truth: Over 90% of child support payers are men, while over 90% of recipients are women. This isn’t because men are deadbeats — it’s because the courts continue to award primary custody to mothers in the vast majority of cases, then force fathers to pay.

Fathers are hit with a brutal double standard. They’re blocked from claiming basic tax credits like the eligible dependant credit, even though they’re still supporting their children. The system treats them as cash machines, not parents. Meanwhile, the outdated formula fails to properly account for shared parenting time or a father’s actual costs of maintaining a home for his kids.

This broken system pushes good fathers into financial ruin, depression, and sometimes suicide — all while the government and courts act like they’re doing what’s best for children. They’re not. They’re destroying men’s lives and pretending it’s justice.

The child support guidelines haven’t kept up with modern parenting. They were built for a world where dads were absent, not for today’s fathers who want to be actively involved. Instead of adapting, the system just keeps squeezing fathers harder.

This isn’t support. It’s punishment.
